For some of you the following might also not be news since we’ve met in Germany. I’ll try to keep the overview from end of August until now brief.

The first part is easy: My parents and I took a tour through China, including Changchun, Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Yongshuo and Shanghai. It was very interesting and it would take two letters to write about it. I might put a detailed description on my homepage sometimes. I especially liked Guilin which is famous for its landscape, but also the other parts of our trip have been very interesting. The trip ended with a very interesting taxi ride from the airport to my home: the driver violated all speed limits while watching a DVD on the player embedded in the front-passenger’s sun shield and finally charged double the regular price. As you can imagine I was just glad to be back home ;-).

Two weeks after being back in Changchun and one week before my scheduled trip to Germany for visits and work I broke my foot. The colleagues and I had been playing basketball for about 10 seconds when one guy from the opposite team stepped on my foot while I was jumping for the ball. They took me to the Hospital attached to the University Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine which worried me somewhat at first. What were they going do with me there: acupuncture, incense sticks, trying to run out the daemons in me? I calmed down when they brought me to the brand new Siemens x-ray machine next to their NMR and CRT. You can find the x-rays in my online gallery, too. None of the 5 doctors giving me the cast did speak English but I had a colleague trying to translate for me. I then got special service both in Changchun (colleagues bringing me food or cooking for me) and at the airport (being pushed in a wheelchair will get you much faster through the airport control and with a broken foot one gets better seats in the plane). My German doctor verified the Chinese diagnosis and treatment. I did confuse him a little when I asked him whether my kind of fracture is known as a Jones fracture in literature; too much time at home made me search Google and read medical journals. He vanished for a few minutes to check his books – apparently my online diagnosis was right. I did not tell him that there are 3 types of Jones fractures, depending on the reason for the fracture, each with a different treatment. A patient should not be too well informed ;-).

X-Ray of my broken foot.

I spent most of the recovery time in Germany. Now being back in China I have to wear a special shoe for a few more weeks, but I am feeling quite well.

Here in Changchun winter has already started. We have temperatures around 0 °C and a lot of snow. My Chinese seems to be getting better: yesterday did I „talk“ a little with a taxi driver. Well, at least did I understand that he asked me where I am from, where I am working, how old I am and whether I am learning Chinese. And I was even able to answer him in a very broken Chinese! He also told me that German cars are good and that the Euro is a good currency (better than the dollar).

During my absence my boss and his family spent a few days in my apartment since his heating system was being repaired. Now I find rice grains everywhere. Apparently during my trip to Germany a bag of rice must have toppled in China ;-). Since I do not have better stories than the toppled bag of rice for now I should finish this newsletter.

Hi everybody, it’s been a very loooooong time since my last news update.
