Our institute had a two weeks vacation and afterwards everybody returned to old habits. But before the vacation our boycott even made national news: \u5b66\u751f\u7528\u9ad8\u7cbe\u4eea\u5668\u8ba1\u7b97\u996d\u83dc\u6210\u672c\u6297\u8bae\u98df\u5802\u6da8\u4ef7(\u56fe).<\/p>\n<p>During the vacation I&#8217;ve been to Beijing with some of my colleagues. While they were having beamtime at the Beijing Synchrotron Station I was visiting the city. As it turned out: August might not be the best time to visit Beijing &#8212; 35 \u00b0C in the shadow and high humidity. Nevertheless I was walking most of the time to get to know the city. I visited:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Temple of Heaven (where ancient emperors prayed for bumper harvests &#8212; \u00a0very nice area with lots of historic temples and buildings and also nice gardens),<\/li>\n<li>the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower (where in former times the time was announced by drums and bells &#8212; I waited 1 1\/2 hours for a demonstration and used the waiting time to cool down a bit),<\/li>\n<li>the former residence of Soong Ching Ling (the wife of one of the founders of the Chinese republic and the Grand Dame of the communist party. She lived in a quite nice place which has formerly been a palace of a prince &#8211; it pays to be communist \ud83d\ude09 )<\/li>\n<li>the city planning museum (which has a nice big 3D model of the city &#8230; and a fine air conditioning \ud83d\ude09 )<\/li>\n<li>the Qian Men Da Jie (which appears to be the only pedestrian zone in Beijing but with lots of shopping opportunities and even one of the three H&amp;M in China, which makes H&amp;M a very rare brand in China. Funny thing: the whole area was torn down a few years ago and rebuilt in the former style but with current technology. This is called ambiance protection and will be applied to further run down places in the city &#8211; you can learn about that in more detail in the city planning museum ;-).)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33\" src=\"https:\/\/sfischer.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/cn20.jpg\" alt=\"On tian an men square. Lots of people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And then I saw the following while being in Beijing: &#8222;Wetten Dass???&#8220; with Thomas Gottschalk. While I was having a rest in my hostel room I switched through the channels and there they were: Thommy, Michelle, the guests, the bets, from Mallorca, with Michael Ballack (so it must have been the show before the world championship), no subtitles but actually dubbed. Funny thing: they cut the show down to two hours here which makes it a lot better. And they translated Peter Maffay to Peter Murphy :-D.<\/p>\n<p>Work has been going fine the last weeks. I am about to submit a new paper, am teaching English and programming with Matlab to the colleagues and am working on some new evaluation routines. In October we will be going to DESY in Hamburg for experiments. I will be leaving here one week ahead of my colleagues and enjoy some free days at home (I will arrive in Germany at September 27th). Usually we have temperatures between 25 and 32 \u00b0C here and a blue sky (which you will rarely see in Beijing). Every two weeks there is one day with heavy rain. Last Thursday it was very heavy rain: my kitchen got flooded since water got pressed through the walls (!!) and on some streets the water was about 1m high (I am not kidding!). When watching the news I get the impression that there are a lot of natural catastrophes in China &#8211; flooding, drought, oil spill, &#8230; And usually in places I have been before (Jilin is flooded, Dalian has a oil catastrophe and the ChangBai Mountain volcano is about to erupt according to Science magazine). Hopefully the Chinese government does not find out about my wreak of havoc; they might evict me ;-).<\/p>\n<p>Some additional observations:<br \/>\nA haircut (at least my haircut) is approximately 1 \u20ac here.<br \/>\nThe fast trains between the bigger cities here have a similar comfort like our ICE trains.
